Flying first class has many perks, but getting to access them for free can be a whole other level of fantastic. Check out some of our favorite ways to get into that elusive first class cabin without paying a dime.
Sign up for an airline credit card
Signing up for an airline-affiliated credit card lets you add up miles that you can use for a premium upgrade.
Dress well and be friendly
Not showing up at the airport in your yoga pants and flip flops is a start. But dressing smartly and being on your best behavior can sometimes land you that coveted upgrade while the rest in cargo shorts and slouchy tank tops stay back in coach.
Enroll in a customer loyalty program
Being loyal can pay off when it comes to airlines. Regular flights earn you points, and customer loyalty programs give you bonuses and ways to use those points like most cannot.
Volunteer to fly later
Being flexible and taking the later flight if yours is oversold can have a huge payoff. Airlines are often open to compensating you for your cooperation with flight credit or an upgrade on the later flight, depending on how badly they need those seats filled.
Make friends with your travel agent.
TA's can sometimes get you assigned to preferred seats without charge, see upgrade availability and leave a note on the system that might improve your chances of being picked for an upgrade. Remember to request your TA, the next time you're planning a flight.
Finally, be reasonable. When you're hoping to get something premium for nothing, being pushy and demanding won't work. Understand that you have better chances of an upgrade if you are traveling solo, if you show up early and request the gate agent politely and directly and if the flight is well overbooked. Another reason you might get an upgrade is if the airline has messed up and inconvenienced you seriously. If you find yourself in this position, speak up and ask.
While the chances of a surprise or unpaid upgrades get slimmer every day, following these easy-to-follow tips always puts you in the best possible position to be chosen for an upgrade first.
