Even if you sail through the myriad snaking lines at an airport, there are still several ways you can inadvertently waste time, money, and effort. We've put together a list of expert tips to give you the most hassle-free airport experience.
Dress for success
This doesn't mean dressing to impress or for comfort. Instead, it means dressing strategically and eliminating anything that could set off alarms. Ditch chunky jewelry and belts with metal. Wear socks and simple footwear that you can slip on and off easily.
Use online-check in services
Unless you have an issue you couldn't resolve before getting to the airport, there's no good excuse for not checking in online. If you're traveling without luggage, you can even head straight to the security line.
Play Nice
When it comes to being a passenger, patience and a smile can take you a long way. Gate staff, flight attendants, TSA agents, and others are weary from dealing with difficult people. But model behavior means you might get simple privileges that others don't or at least make your flight more pleasant by making the most of any situation.
Get a TSA Precheck
This one is great for business travelers or those who fly a lot. Valid for five years, you will need to fill out an application, pay a nonrefundable fee, and get an appointment at an enrollment center. What this means while traveling is shorter lines, not removing shoes, liquids, and laptops and leaving something behind when in a hurry.
Download Airline and Airport Apps
Several airports and airlines have developed apps to help travelers navigate their way around everything from boarding gates and baggage to wheelchair services and seats. Using your carrier's app will keep you updated on changes or instructions even before you leave for the airport, which can save you a lot of time and effort.
Carry something to eat
Airport food is usually both expensive and not very healthy. Carrying a sandwich, trail mix, fruit, or cookies will save you a lot of money and give you a few healthy options you already love to eat. TIP: Check the TSA's website for prohibited food items before you pack your snacks.
